This year marks the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 75), opening in New York on September 15, 2020. UNGA High-Level Week will take place September 21-25. The 75th Anniversary is an opportunity for the United States to remind member states to hold true to its principles of advancing peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development.
On September 22, President Trump made remarks to the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly. Noting that if the United Nations is to be an effective organization, it must focus on the real problems of the world. “This includes terrorism, the oppression of women, forced labor, drug trafficking, human and sex trafficking, religious persecution, and the ethnic cleansing of religious minorities.”
“America will always be a leader in human rights. My administration is advancing religious liberty, opportunity for women, the decriminalization of homosexuality, combatting human trafficking, and protecting unborn children.”

- U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted Department of State ✔ @StateDept .@SecPompeo: Just imagine what Iran would do if it were able to freely purchase more advanced weapons. We won’t let that happen.
- U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted Morgan Ortagus ✔ @statedeptspox Replying to @statedeptspox U.S. sanctions on Iran target their support for terrorism, their nuclear program, and the corrupt Iranian officials who oppress the Iranian people- not humanitarian trade and assistance. The U.S. even offered COVID assistance to Iran, but @HassanRouhani‘s government rejected it.
- U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted Morgan Ortagus ✔ @statedeptspox Replying to @statedeptspox If the “era of dominance and hegemony” that Rouhani speaks of is over, why doesn’t Iran get its troops and proxies out of Iraq, and stop trying to dominate Lebanon through Hezbollah?
- U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted Morgan Ortagus ✔ @statedeptspox At #UN75, @HassanRouhani claimed that Iran supports peace & combats extremism- if only that were true. The Iranian regime has actually sent more than $16 billion to its terror proxies & partners since 2012. That money should’ve gone back to the Iranian people they stole it from.
- U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted Department of State ✔ @StateDept President @realDonaldTrump: America is fulfilling our destiny as peacemaker. #UNGA75
- U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted Morgan Ortagus ✔ @statedeptspox Cuban President @DiazCanelB spoke about democratizing the @UN, but not his own country. He violates the international labor conventions which Cuba has signed, while his disingenuous words about treating people with “dignity” obscure his brand of injustice & human rights abuses.
- U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted Department of State ✔ @StateDept President @realDonaldTrump on COVID-19: We are once again engaged in a great global struggle. We have waged a fierce battle against the invisible enemy, which has claimed countless lives in 188 countries. #UNGA75
- U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted Department of State ✔ @StateDept President @realDonaldTrump: We must hold accountable the nation which unleashed this plague onto the world: China.
- U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted Ambassador Kelly Craft ✔ @USAmbUN The Iranian president’s #UNGA speech today was a tour de force of dishonesty. He spoke of “blatant and gross” violations of the @UN Charter, but apparently with no sense of irony. Iran is the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism & fuels conflict across the Middle East. #hypocrisy
- U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted Department of State ✔ @StateDept .@SecPompeo: President @realDonaldTrump’s Executive Order…gives us a new and powerful tool to enforce that UN arms embargo, and hold those who seek to evade UN sanctions accountable. https://go.usa.gov/xGPwN .
- U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted Morgan Ortagus ✔ @statedeptspox At #UN75, Beijing called itself a “defender of international order.” Here’s the reality: the People’s Republic of China ignored international law in the South China Sea, sent fishing fleets to other countries’ waters, and broke its promises, like protecting Hong Kong’s autonomy.

- U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted The White House ✔ @WhiteHouse Replying to @WhiteHouse “The United Nations must hold China accountable for their actions.”
- U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted The White House ✔ @WhiteHouse Replying to @WhiteHouse “The Chinese government and the World Health Organization—which is virtually controlled by China—falsely declared that there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission.
Later, they falsely said people without symptoms would not spread the disease.” - U.S. Mission to the UN Retweeted The White House ✔ @WhiteHouse Replying to @WhiteHouse “In the earliest days of the virus, China locked down travel domestically while allowing flights to leave China and infect the world.
China condemned my travel ban on their country, even as they cancelled domestic flights and locked citizens in their homes.”
