MSC Special Edition 2021
Traditionally held in February, the MSC is the world’s leading forum for foreign and security policy. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the 57th Munich Security Conference had to be postponed. However, in order to provide senior leaders with a globally visible platform at this critical time, the MSC has decided to host a Special Edition at the very time and place the 57th Munich Security Conference would have kicked-off normally. The order and number of speakers are still subject to change in the coming days.
On February 19, 2021, the MSC Special Edition “Beyond Westlessness: Renewing Transatlantic Cooperation, Meeting Global Challenges” will assemble some of the world’s most senior decision-makers to discuss how to rebuild and renew the transatlantic alliance and highlight the areas in which transatlantic and international cooperation are most urgently needed. The MSC Special Edition will feature key issues that will be revisited at the next main conference and in other MSC formats throughout the year.
Format
The MSC Special Edition will be produced on February 19 from 10.00 a.m. to 01.15 p.m. EST / 4.00 to 7.15 p.m. CET at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich. Invited speakers will join the event virtually from their respective locations. The event will be held in English and German. Simultaneous translation will be offered.
The MSC Special Edition will be broadcast live on all MSC digital channels (live stream on the MSC website, Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube), on the TV channel Phoenix, as well as member stations of the European Broadcasting Union. The Bayerischer Rundfunk will again function as Host Broadcaster and will stream the Special Edition on BR24.de.

The broadcast will be divided into four thematic sessions, each of which will feature short statements from selected senior leaders, a Q&A with MSC Chairman Ambassador Ischinger and pre-recorded contributions from selected participants of the Munich Young Leaders program. The Minister President of Bavaria Markus Söder will open the event with Welcoming Remarks. Natalie Amiri, International Correspondent, ARD German Television, will act as Master of Ceremony.
The Road to Munich
In order to continue vital debates until the 57th Munich Security Conference can take place in person, the Special Edition on February 19 will kick-off a series of events and initiatives under the title “Road to Munich”. Stops on this road will include virtual high-level events on key aspects of the transatlantic partnership as well as interactive workshops and tabletop exercises to prepare the ground for the 57th Munich Security Conference, which is currently planned for February 2022.
