US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo couldn’t have been more blunt this week: Britain needs to wean itself off the Chinese economic teat.

“Beijing’s aggressive behaviour shows why countries should avoid economic over-reliance on China and should guard their critical infrastructure from Chinese Communist Party influence,” he said in an excoriating three-paragraph press statement on Wednesday (AEST).
