Throughout the ages, people in all countries have long cherished the aspiration for a better life. It is therefore a heavy responsibility of political parties as makers of national policies and shapers of the public opinion to promote development of their countries and improve the wellbeing of their people.
To seek happiness for the people and rejuvenation for the nation constitute the original aspiration and mission of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Starting from the 18th National Congress in 2012, the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jiping at its core has worked to fulfill its solemn pledge to the people that our goal is no other than the people’s wish for a better life. By adopting a people-centred development approach, the efforts of the CPC have been instrumental in the historic transformation and historic achievements in all undertakings of both the Party and the country. As a result, the Chinese nation has achieved a tremendous transformation: it has stood up, grown rich, and is becoming strong. For the Chinese people, their sense of fulfillment, happiness, and security has been immensely uplifted.
Adhering to the philosophy of people first and the people-centred approach, the CPC has placed poverty elimination high on its governance agenda, organising and accomplishing by far the largest and most intensive battle in human history against poverty. By the year 2020, thanks to eight years of relentless efforts, China fulfilled its poverty elimination targets as scheduled, lifting the entire rural population above the current poverty line, with no county remaining in the impoverished category. The eradication of extreme poverty and regional poverty enabling nearly 100 million people to shake off poverty signifies the fulfillment of the poverty elimination target 10 years ahead of schedule as set in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, thus creating the “world’s most successful miracle in poverty elimination”.
Facing the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, the CPC, out of its utmost consideration for people’s lives and health, has rallied and led the Chinese people of all ethnic groups in effecting a concerted response. The tremendous efforts paid off. It only took a little more than a month to have basically contained the rising spread of the virus, about two months to have the daily increase in domestic cases under control to single figures, and around three months to have won the decisive battle in defence of Wuhan City and indeed of Hubei Province. Subsequently, concentrated efforts were devoted to wipe out the sporadic outbreak of clustered cases in several places, culminating in the major strategic achievement in the fight against the virus and accomplishing another heroic feat in the history of mankind against diseases. In December 2020, China launched its COVID-19 vaccination roll-out programme for priority groups. By 3 February 2021, 31.236 million doses had been administered.
At the Fifth Plenary Session of the Nineteenth Central Committee of the CPC in October 2020, the Recommendations of the CPC Central Committee on the Formulation of the Fourteenth Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development and the Specification of the Long-Range Goal by the Year 2035 was deliberated and adopted. Highlighted in this document are the important considerations and major measures regarding the upliftment of people’s wellbeing and the improvement in the quality of people’s life including, among others, employment, income, education, culture & sports, elderly care and social security. This speaks volumes for the CPC’s commitment to better serving, defending and advancing the fundamental interests of the vast majority of the people.
As the world today is experiencing the confluence of once-in-a-century changes and the once-in-a-century pandemic, the destiny and future of countries have become closely connected and intertwined as never before. The CPC stands ready to work with political parties of all countries to explore the building of a new type of party-to-party relations that seeks to expand common ground while reserving differences and enhances mutual respect and mutual learning, and to strengthen exchanges on governance experience, facilitate practical cooperation across the board as we strive to build a global community with a shared future that brings greater benefit to people of all countries.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC. With a view to helping the international community better understand what and how the CPC has done to seek happiness for the people, a thematic briefing on “Stories of CPC” will be held in Xinjiang on Monday, 22 February 2021 under the theme of “A Better Life for All”. The event will be conducted via video link. Topics for interactive discussions include safeguarding people’s health and safety, poverty elimination and unity and solidarity among ethnic groups. The event will feature keynote speeches by Chen Quanguo, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regional Committee, and Song Tao, Minster of the International Department, CPC Central Committee.
